UKHSA Latest Data

  • 789 deaths [within 28 days of first positive test result for COVID-19] reported in the last 7 days.
  • 58,786 new coronavirus infections in the last 7 days according to the latest UK data report - the actual number UK-wide is potentially significantly higher, always worth checking out the data provided by the ONS and by the Kingโ€™s College team in the accompanying tables.
  • 319,113 coronavirus infections have been reported across the UK in the last 28 days according to data in the latest UK data report.
  • The number of deaths in the past week equates on average to around 113 deaths each of the past 7 days. If this was to be the โ€œnew normalโ€ for daily deaths caused by COVID-19, then annually this would equate to around 41,141 deaths across the UK.
  • Meanwhile, a total of 4,822 deaths due to COVID-19 have been reported across the UK in the last 28 days.
  • 627 COVID-19 hospital admissions occurred on 15 May 2022.
  • 6,879 patients suffering from COVID-19 are currently occupying hospital beds โ€“ reported as of 18 May 2022.
  • 188 COVID-19 patients are occupying mechanical ventilation beds โ€“ according to the data reported on 18 May 2022.
  • All three of these healthcare measures remain a concern for our under-pressure NHS.

SO FAR:

  • 840 days since the first infection due to the SARS-CoV-2 virus was reported in Britain (31 January 2020)
  • 804 days since the first reported death (6 March 2020). Coronavirus has now been responsible for infecting around 22.2 million people in the UK (according to the official reported positive cases data)
  • In this time, the virus has been responsible for at least 177,890 deaths (within 28 days of a first positive test result). Official data also currently indicate there have been (at least) 194,550 deaths in total, where the deceased personโ€™s death certificate mentioned COVID-19 as one of the causes, registered up to Friday 6 May 2022, according to the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA)

latest news

  • JCVI provides interim advice on an autumn COVID-19 booster programme

The boosters would be for more vulnerable adults, alongside frontline social care and health workers, in order to maintain their protection over the winter against severe COVID-19. The advice should be considered as interim and for the purposes of operational planning for the autumn for the NHS, care homes and wider health community.

As in autumn 2021, the primary objective of the 2022 autumn booster programme will be to increase population immunity and protection against severe COVID-19 disease, specifically hospitalisation and death, over the winter period.

The JCVIโ€™s current view is that in autumn 2022, a COVID-19 vaccine should be offered to:

  • residents in a care home for older adults and staff
  • frontline health and social care workers
  • all those 65 years of age and over
  • adults aged 16 to 64 years who are in a clinical risk group

โ€œThe UK has lost 194,550 people, whose death certificate mentioned COVID-19 as one of the causes, up to 6 May 2022. The irreplaceable loss of loved ones, the burden heart-breaking for so many families. ๐Ÿ•ฏ๏ธIn all likelihood, the dreadful 200,000-milestone will be reached in June.โ€ โ€“ Dr Joe Pajak
