▪ Deaths involving COVID

Deaths involving COVID-19 increased

In the week ending 30 September 2022 (Week 39), 10,960 deaths were registered in England and Wales; 287 of these deaths mentioned "novel coronavirus (COVID-19)", accounting for 2.6% of all deaths.

This is an increase compared with the week ending 23 September 2022 (Week 38), when the number of all-cause deaths registered was 8,751; COVID-19 accounted for 235 of these deaths (2.7%), which was a similar proportion to the latest week.

The number of deaths registered in Week 39 is affected by the bank holiday on 19 September 2022, so caution is needed when comparing across weeks, and with the five-year average.
