▫ Ministers face a clash over bonfire of EU law

Ministers are facing a significant challenge from both the opposition and Conservative MPs regarding their plans to scrap EU-era laws that have been copied over to UK law post-Brexit.

The government has proposed that thousands of laws will expire automatically come December unless explicitly kept or replaced. This has caused alarm as vital legislation may be lost inadvertently. Labour is advocating for the deadline to be pushed back to 2026 in order to ensure that employment rights are preserved.

Moreover, a number of Tory backbenchers, including former Brexit secretary David Davis, are supporting an effort to give MPs more control over what is discarded.
