In an unexpected announcement, New Zealand’s Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has announced her resignation and confirmed a national election for next October.

At her party’s first caucus meeting of the year, Ardern stated that she “no longer had enough in the tank” to do the job, and that it was time for her to step down. She expressed her understanding of the responsibility that comes with such a privileged role and her recognition that she was no longer able to fulfil it to the best of her ability. It was, she said, “that simple”.
