▫ Unboxed: The £116.8m Brexit Festival that couldn’t deliver
The Unboxed science and arts festival was commissioned by Theresa May in 2018 and cost £116.8m to the taxpayer. It was intended to bring the UK together and enhance its international reputation. However, the final evaluation found that it brought together a fraction of the audience hoped for. It also only raised a fraction of the financial benefit predicted. The festival ran from March to December 2022 in 107 locations around the UK. Ministers predicted a £170m windfall for the UK economy, but the festival brought less than £20m additional spending across Britain. Only about 20.5 million people engaged with one of the Unboxed activities.
